Five More GOP Lawmakers Demand Craig Step Down
It's happening almost too fast to keep track of, but here are five more GOP members of Congress who have called on Wide Stance Craig to go:
Rep. Mark Souder (R-IN)Rep. Jeff Miller (R-FL)
Rep. Ginny Brown-Waite (R-FL)
Rep. Bobby Jindal (R-LA)
Rep. Ron Lewis (R-KY)
The number of resignation calls, of course, can only go up.
Meanwhile, Senator Norm Coleman has decided that it isn't enough that he called for Craig to go yesterday; now he's gone and returned Craig's campaign contributions, too.
Late Update: Think Progress has a good rundown on the rather different reaction GOP pols had to the David Vitter scandal.

OkieFromMuskogee wrote on August 30, 2007 12:22 PM:Someone should ask these righteous Republicans why they aren't calling for David Vitter's resignation.
Vitter and Craig were both being unfaithful to their wives. Both have admitted breaking the law. (Mr. Vitter's engagement of kinky prostitutes in DC and New Orleans was illegal, right?) Both have exposed their own hypocrisy in preaching "sanctity of marriage" and "family values" to the rest of us.
Come on, Republicans! What, exactly, is your distinction between Vitter and Craig? Is it that homosexuality is worse than prostitution? Or is it that Vitter's Louisiana might replace him with a Democrat?
gcs wrote on August 30, 2007 12:29 PM:It's pretty obvious to me why Republicans are demanding Craig step down and are leaving Vitter alone - glass houses. I'll bet these Senators aren't trolling airport men's rooms looking for a quickie, but I'll bet a hundred times that amount every single one of them is regularly paying for sex with high-priced Washington call girls. I guess it means even Republicans have a limit on blatant hypocrisy.

Steve Talbert wrote on August 30, 2007 12:34 PM:Maybe Coleman is worried that Craig didn't wash his hands afterwards...
I guess Jinhal didn't ask Vitter for his resignation because maybe he couldn't cast the first stone??
thomas wrote on August 30, 2007 12:35 PM:That's "Diaper" Dave Vitter. Never refer to him any other way.
It's time to keep the ridicule running for these sleazebag hypocrite rethuglicans.
Any Republican beating the down the door to go on the record asking Craig kinna makes you wonder what they might be hiding in the closet...

I like the ring of either "Diaperman" Dave or Vitter the Shitter. ha!
hopeless pedant wrote on August 30, 2007 12:59 PM:Resign from the Senate for pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge of disorderly conduct?
That is pretty surreal.
Bush and Cheney both have DUI misdemeanors on their records. And as Paul Begala said yesterday, far more people die from drunk driving than from potty sex.
Robert in Beirut wrote on August 30, 2007 1:01 PM:Who remembers the chairman of the Young Republicans who was hoovering his drunken roomates?

Diaper Dave got God's forgiveness, he said God forgave him. Or was it Jesus? The Virgin Mary might have been the better choice.
But i don't think even GOd has the power to forgive 'homosexual' sins committed in a men's room toilet stall.
JustMe wrote on August 30, 2007 1:11 PM:Craig can deny this all he wants - why did he plead guilty then? Toe tapping, reaching and running his hand under the ledge, etc. is a sign that he wanted gay sex. Look, usually when a Judge has a drunk driver stand before him and say, "This is my FIRST time I was caught speeding", the Judge usually figures that for every "First" time he was caught, he did it 1000 times and never got caught. This rules applies here also. Suppose it was a teenage boy in the next stall...the old boy probably would have jumped the stall to get to him. He's a Tea Room, Closeted Old Queen (the worst kind). He's right - he's not gay - the Gay Community wouldn't want that urnial dipper in their realm.
Call it like it is----- An old perverted man!
"Call it like it is----- An old perverted man!"
That's how his GOP brethren view it. But dems seem more inclined to express the view that this is what happens when you're gay and gop, you're forced into restrooms and such out of fear and shame. It's sad and pathetic. Unless maybe Craig enjoyed the thrill of it. Then he was plain reckless ... or had a compulsion he could not control.
The cop did seem to encourage him a bit, even if passively. I doubt Craig would force himself on anyone. He'd have been arrested long ago if he'd taken that approach.
Bruce wrote on August 30, 2007 1:35 PM:It's Republican vs. Democratic governor, that's all, for Craig vs. Vitter. If Vitter quits, the Dems get a Senator in LA - terrible news for the GOP.
Jeff wrote on August 30, 2007 2:00 PM:Why doesn't any of this coverage point out that Craig has never done an honest days work in his entire life? He was sent off to college by his gentleman rancher father and came back with a worthless degree. Then he lived with his parents until they couldn't stand him any more, so daddy got together with his buddies and put him up for election to the Idaho legislature. At last it got him out of the house. Since then that is all he has done and all he knows. His performance in 1982 shows that he was dumb as a post way back then and has not improved.
Given all that has come out about the behavior of high DC insiders, is it any wonder that this man engages in outrageous behavior with impunity and then expresses self righteous indignation when caught? He doesn't know any different or any better. How many times has his Senate business card served him as a "Get Out of Jail Free"?
This old queen should have been bitch slapped years ago and sent packing back to Idaho. He is the deformed product of the repressive system he has helped create and maintain. Let his own people deal with the consequences.

Delia wrote on August 30, 2007 2:26 PM:I thought the rule was something about not being in trouble until you're caught with a live boy or a dead girl. For male politicians, that is. Of course, there's Kevin Drum's theory that it has to do with the fact that Craig's from a state with a repug governor and Vitter's from a state with a dem one. Oh, the possibilities for cynicism are endless.

Just rehashing some of the good times. Can't help myself. My sense of humor never grew up.
But here's the question of the hour! Will Rep. Bob Allen (R-FL) call on Senator Allen to "go"?
Lucia wrote on August 30, 2007 5:53 PM:Why is Craig's behavior not protected speech? And if it's a crime to arrange an assignation in a public place (as opposed to actually having one -- that should be illegal), why don't undercover cops troll singles bars?
(Craig's a hypocrite, and his explanation is incredibly lame, but I still don't think this should be a crime, even a misdemeanor.)
