Flashback: Larry Craig Called Bill Clinton "A Bad Boy, A Naughty Boy"
GOP Senator Larry Craig, who we now know was arrested for lewd conduct in a men's room in June, had this to say about Bill Clinton on Meet the Press on January 24, 1999, at the height of Monicagate:
MR. RUSSERT: Larry Craig, would you want the last word from the Senate be an acquittal of the president and no censure?SEN. CRAIG: Well, I don't know where the Senate's going to be on that issue of an up or down vote on impeachment, but I will tell you that the Senate certainly can bring about a censure reslution and it's a slap on the wrist. It's a, "Bad boy, Bill Clinton. You're a naughty boy." The American people already know that Bill Clinton is a bad boy, a naughty boy.
I'm going to speak out for the citizens of my state, who in the majority think that Bill Clinton is probably even a nasty, bad, naughty boy. The question issue now is simply this: Did he lie under oath? Did he perjure himself and did he obstruct justice? And that's where we're trying to go now in this truth-seeking process.
Which, again, is not directly at odds with lewd conduct in a men's room. Though the sex-out-of-wedlock piece of this just might be somewhat relevant.
More soon.
Late Update: AmericaBlog has a good rundown of Craig's positions on gay issues.

CT Voter wrote on August 27, 2007 5:54 PM:Nasty, bad, naughty boy?
This is just strange language to use to describe an adult, isn't it? Language that unwittingly reveals more about the state of Larry Craig's mind than he maybe would want it to?
Or maybe it's just me. It tells me more about Senator Craig's mind than I want to know...
Forgive my ignorance about Larry Craig, but is he married? Honestly, I'm going to fall over in hysterical laughter if he is....
Greg wrote on August 27, 2007 5:55 PM:you know, I noticed that too, the dwelling on him being a "naughty," "nasty" boy...
CT Voter wrote on August 27, 2007 6:00 PM:From Senator Craig's official website:
He is married to the former Suzanne Thompson. They have three children: two sons, Mike and Jay, a daughter, Shae, and nine beautiful grandchildren.
Just a question: is it politically more damaging if you plead guilty to lewd behavior in a men's restroom or in a women's restroom?
I just totally got flashbacks of watching Monty Python's "Search for the Holy Grail"... the part with the 'grail like beacon' at the castle full of virgins.
"Wicked, wicked, naughty Zoot! She will have to be punished!"
illlich wrote on August 27, 2007 6:03 PM:I don't know whether Craig is a closeted homosexual or not, whether this is a case of lewd behavior, or just a misunderstanding (Roll Call site details are locked up from heavy traffic), but it certainly appears that yet another conservative is guilty of the very conduct they claim to disdain. It really is time to start taking odds on who will be next.
On a related note, what is the fixation with using public places for anonymous hookups? It seems you're just asking to get caught (or is that part of the thrill?) Or is it only the in-denial-closeted that do this, for fear of being seen in a gay bar? Someone clue me in.
Am4 wrote on August 27, 2007 6:07 PM:You're listing Craig's party affiliation as "D" under his picture above. Might want to fix that.

BHunt wrote on August 27, 2007 6:20 PM:As noted, Craig is married -- he married a staffer when rumors about his private life began to circulate in Idaho. The three children are hers by an earlier marriage.
be wrote on August 27, 2007 6:37 PM:Here's a youtube of Craig feeling compelled to deny involvement in a 1980's page sex scandal even as no public figures had been named.
Eric Stepp wrote on August 27, 2007 6:39 PM:Ok, I was just reading TPM, and there's a post about the Larry Craig story bumping Gonzales's resignation from Roll Call's front page.
I'm wondering, and maybe it's my cynic part coming out, is this coincidence?
Why did Roll Call wait 19 days to break the story? Craig pleaded guilty on August 8. Why hold it?
FMagno wrote on August 27, 2007 7:10 PM:Please leave the Honorable Senator L. Craig. His overstepping of the left toe of thye man in the restroom was pure and simple
coincidence. It does not show of anyhting lewd among the conservatives. He might be drunk. Thus, it mitigates his conduct.
But, please, ladies, give Sen Craig, being a real naughty boy, a bad boy in that restroom, a break. Leave him alone. He was lonely!
4TruthNmedia wrote on August 27, 2007 7:22 PM:Isnt this special...hmm...kinda reminds me of another famous hypocrite of recent memory down in Louisiana. This old guy must have been doing this "nastyiness" for quite some time so how is it no one ever turned him in to Larry Flynt for the million dollar reward? Very interesting.
ethan wrote on August 27, 2007 9:30 PM:>>>Why did Roll Call wait 19 days to break the story? Craig pleaded guilty on August 8. Why hold it?
No coincidence imho. Actually, I think it was less Roll Call's decision to hold and more Gonzo's decision late Friday to come out (no pun intended) on Monday knowing the news about Craig was about to drop.
blah wrote on August 27, 2007 9:55 PM:Does anyone have a link to the transcript?
Meet the Press' website only has transcripts going back to 2003.
Mark wrote on August 27, 2007 11:13 PM:It reminds me of a poster I saw recently, glorifying Chuck Norris in a sarcastic kind of way. The lead bullet reads; "if Chuck Norris has sex with a man, it is not because he is gay. He has simply run out of women."
It sure must suck (no pun intended) to run out of women when you're married and Grandpa to nine beautiful grandchildren.
Carol Foster wrote on August 28, 2007 4:50 PM:It's not so funny because he did it or because he might be a homosexual. I really don't care about his sexual orientation. My issue is that he is a Republican with an "R". Here's another hypocrite Republican who has publicly proclaimed the immorality of homosexuality. He has supported issue after issue that takes away the rights and dignity of homosexuals. Now he shows us that all along he was behaving in ways just like them! What a hypocrite. Now he gets his justice. This is so amusing and refreshing with an "R".
annelouise wrote on August 28, 2007 5:35 PM:tsk tsk - shame on you senator - you're a naughty boy for lying, not for being gay!
cv wrote on August 28, 2007 6:06 PM:Craig is not gay.
He just enjoys sex with men in bathrooms.
If he were gay, he would hang around other gay men, order lavender sidecars and have a chance at normal relationships. He hates that idea. It sounds scary and boring at the same time.
Danny-boy wrote on August 28, 2007 6:23 PM:To CT Voter:
Yes, Craig is married; I understand that he adopted the three children of his wife's prior marriage.
Curt M wrote on August 28, 2007 6:25 PM:It's a rather important point that the children Craig has are not his own progeny. From Wikipedia:
Craig is married and has adopted the three children that his wife, Suzanne, had from her previous marriage—two sons, Mike and Jay, and a daughter, Shae. Through his adopted children, Craig has nine grandchildren.chris_from_boca wrote on August 28, 2007 6:46 PM:

Folks who tell others how to behave, all the while operating as if the rules don't apply to their own behavior.
Too bad, so sad that the ONLY Constituency the repulsive Repugs have left are the Christian Righties.
Those 29 percent of that radicals that think Larry Craig caused 9/11.
That should teach Larry to keep his shoes in his own toilet stall next time. Hey at least a Dem like Bill Clinton liked women. I bet Bush is just like Larry. I bet Bush married Laura to hide who he REALLY is. I bet Bush is JUST like Larry.
I bet Laura doesn't really have a pinched nerve.
Hmm… Who else lied under oath??? Bill Clinton made him do it.
I think you highlighted the wrong section
Original Paragraph:
||the citizens of my state, who in the majority think that Bill Clinton is probably even a nasty, bad, naughty boy.||
What should have been highlighted:
The question issue now is simply this: Did he lie under oath? Did he perjure himself and did he obstruct justice?
*sigh*
Can't wait until Jon (The Daily Show) gets a hold of the "bad, nasty boy," quote. Priceless!
esesti wrote on August 29, 2007 12:56 AM:HAHAHAHA!!! I cannot mask my laughter about this! WOW...another right wing republican busted! He so publicly expressed his disdain for homosexuals. BUSTED!
And yes, I do see the twinkle in his eye when he describes Clinton as a naughty, nasty boy.

D. Kirkpatrick wrote on August 29, 2007 12:06 PM:The people of Idaho were talking about Larry Craig's behavior during his first term as a Congressman (Idaho's only member in the House of Representatives). Over 25 years ago, the joke going around "If Larry Craig was re-elected, he would turn a new page." He was re-elected until he decided to run for Senator. He was told by local politicos that he would have to marry before running for Senator. Which he did and was elected by the rich and narrow minded people of Idaho. On paper, there are more millionaires per capita in Idaho than any other state except California.
To their dubious credit they also replaced Frank Church with a man by the name of Sims. Sims made Dan Qualye, Peter Dominick and Chris Cannon look like Rhodes Scholars. All very brilliant Republicans for the very wealthy. The American people get the government they deserve when they vote for slogans and rich people's candidate.

OlongTee wrote on August 29, 2007 8:40 PM:Sen. Craig should have thought of a better excuse. I actually tried taking a "wide stance" the last time I have to go. Unless you are wearing clown pants or your pants were removed you can not perform a "Spread.
Furthermore the last thing you want to do(do) on a public toilet is spread your buttskin up and down a nasty public toilet seat.
I'm hoping that they will overturn his judgement so that we could enjoy his public trial on CourtTV.
