Poll: Udall Ahead In Colorado Senate Race

A new poll from Republican firm Hill Research Consultants shows Congressman Mark Udall (D-CO) narrowly ahead, but within the margin of error, in the race to succeed retiring Senator Wayne Allard (R). Udall leads former GOP Congressman Bob Schaffer 45%-40%.

The data was collected August 26-28, with a margin of error of 3.9%.

The race is seen as a top pickup opportunity for Senate Democrats, as Colorado has been trending blue in recent elections. Colorado Dems currently have one Senate seat, the governorship, four out of seven House seats, and majorities in both houses of the legislature.

Coolness. Only 290 more seats in the House and 50 more in the senate to go until the Republican Party gains the footnote status earned buy the Whig and the Federalist Parties.

It has to be asked though whether this poll ruins the conventional wisdom that the seat would be a blowout for Democrats. It is, after all, always ranked at the very top of pick-up opportunities. Check out these Senate rankings.

I don't think that CO-Sen's status as a top pick-up opportunity is hurt by one poll where the Republican can't even manage to exceed 40%. By all accounts, the Republicans have dramatically alienated the independents and it is hard to see what might change that over the next 14 months. Maybe something will, but right now you have to like Udall's chances as this poll gives you the starting point.
