Republicans Criticize GAO Report's Terms -- Even Though They Voted To Mandate It
This afternoon GOP leaders rushed to condemn the deeply pessimistic GAO report released today finding that Iraq has only met three of 18 benchmarks set to measure political progress. Here's GOP House leader John Boehner:
"The GAO report really amounts to asking someone to kick an 80-yard field goal and criticizing them when they came up 20 or 25 yards short."
It's interesting that Boehner would criticize the fact that this GAO report laid out benchmarks and tried to determine whether they'd been met. Because Boehner voted for the big Iraq supplemental spending bill that mandated that this report be undertaken and mandated that it hold the Iraqi government to strict standards. Boehner voted for the same approach he's now disparaging.
Meanwhile, at a press conference today, GOP Senate leader Mitch McConnell also dismissed the GAO report. He opined that the report that really mattered was the one coming from General Petraeus (the one being written by the White House). McConnell's justification for this claim: The Petraeus report was "written into law."
This is also intriguing, since the GAO report was also written into law, when the supplemental was passed -- and McConnell voted for it, too. McConnell, too, voted for the approach he's now dismissing.

Reid on the GAO:
“Today's GAO report confirms that the President's Iraq strategy is simply not working. Levels of violence remain dangerously high and civilian deaths show no signs of slowing. And despite the enormous sacrifices of our troops, the Iraqi government remains both unable and unwilling to make the compromises necessary to stabilize their country and quell the violence. With 15 of 18 benchmarks for progress unmet, it is long past time for a new strategy.“Meanwhile, Bin Laden and Al Qaeda have regained their pre-9/11 strength, and we do not have enough troops for Afghanistan or to respond to another unexpected crisis elsewhere around the globe. A new direction in Iraq must begin in order to make America more secure.
“Democrats will continue to push for a new strategy to protect our troops and make America secure. Many Republicans said that the month of September would be the time when they would join the fight for change in Iraq. I hope these Republicans will now follow their words with action.”
Pelosi:
The independent GAO report released today contrasts sharply with President Bush’s stay-the-course Iraq strategy. The GAO report is the latest in a series of assessments to conclude that the Iraqi government has failed to meet nearly every political, economic and security benchmark laid out by President Bush himself in January.Democrats stand with the American people and are committed to bringing our troops home safely and soon. It is time to refocus our nation’s efforts on fighting the real threats of terrorism around the world.

Without the war, what would Bush (and Cheney) have? An attack on Social Security? Dealing with the massive debt incurred? Reduced contracts for aerospace contractors like Haliburton and Blackstone? The Republican spate of scandals? A need for an energy policy that sharply reduces dependence on oil? So you can bet Bush wants to keep the war going. It's inevitable.

The GAO report is based on finality. GAO says something has not been completed, when the report coming from the Pentagon will show what has been accomplished. If you accept this nonsense GAO report then you are determined that it does not matter what the progress is, only that it has not yet ended. And I am sorry to tell you, in the real reality of life: one can indeed end a war, but it means YOU LOSE. If you can't grasp that, then by all means, hug the GAO report with all your might and perhaps it will support the reality you live in, but it won't mesh with the real world.

Just once, I would love to hear a right winger admit that he is dead wrong on an issue.
