Rudy Planning To Spend Part Of 9/11 Anniversary With Noted Basher Of 9/11 Widows

Rudy Giuliani may be running for President on his 9/11 performance, but that hasn't stopped him from planning to spend part of the sixth anniversary of the attacks with a high-profile pundit who's repeatedly bashed the 9/11 widows, calling them "self-obsessed" and accusing them of "enjoying their husband's deaths."

According to Sean Hannity's Web site and to the New York Daily News, Rudy is one of the speakers at Hannity's event this afternoon commemorating the attacks, the summer's final "Freedom Concert." Another one of the concert's planned speakers is pundit Ann Coulter.

Here are some of the things Coulter wrote about the 9/11 widows in her book Godless:

These self-obsessed women seemed genuinely unaware that 9/11 was an attack on our nation and acted as if the terrorist attacks happened only to them.

And:

[T]hey believed the entire country was required to marinate in their exquisite personal agony. Apparently, denouncing Bush was an important part of their closure process.

And:

These broads are millionaires, lionized on TV and in articles about them, reveling in their status as celebrities and stalked by grief-arazzis. I've never seen people enjoying their husbands' deaths so much.

Coulter has also claimed the 9/11 widows "use" the fact that they lost their husbands to make their points heard.

Coulter's comments were so harsh that they even drew condemnation from New York's former Republican governor, George Pataki, who coped with the disaster along with Mayor Rudy. "I was really stunned and I don't think it's at all fair or accurate,” Pataki said of Coulter's comments in June 2006, according to the Associated Press.

The 9/11 widows have been sharply critical of Rudy in the past.

We've emailed a Rudy spokesperson to ask for comment. We'll keep you posted.

Late Update: Over at Think Progress, Matt Corley notes that Joe Lieberman is attending the Hannity/Coulter event, too -- only hours after decrying "terrible, partisan, political sniping."

My very favoritest senator is also going to the Freedom Concert, mixing in with the same disgusting cast of characters listed above. But not before he lectures the rest of us about how disappointing it's been since 9/11 because people are so bitter and partisan.

COL North? Who the hell is he? If they are referring to Ollie "Fawn did it" North, he's *just* a Lieutenant Colonel, for which abbreviation is LTC. Leave it to right wing dodgers to get basic military courtesies wrong.

And, yeah, I know that LTC's are routinely and *verbally* addressed/referred to as "Colonel". I'm a still serving Reserve LTC. And you can be sure I will not use COL unless/until I'm promoted.

Interesting when one remembers there have been suicides over less obvious and egregious misrepresentations.

In a strange way, I'm glad this was posted here. It validates the sadness I felt after the 2000 and 2004 elections. At those times, I couldn't believe that the majority of the Country was stupid enough to elect and re-elect the worst President we have ever seen (and hopefully ever will). When I am confronted with an ignorant and venomous comment like this, it makes me realize that there really are people out there (though in the Northeast I seldom encounter them, at least this bad) who feel this way.

No wonder Bush got elected, no wonder 30% of the Country, even now approves of his performance, no wonder Fox has good ratings, Hannity and O'Reilly stay on the air, and Coulter sells books.

I was right to feel sadness after those elections, and even when people like the author of the post above are in the minority, there are still too many in our own country not to be saddened by it. It represents a failure of our education system, our culture and the value system that I used to think we all share.

Repeating the same misquote doesn't make it true. FYI, he wasn't talking about the vote to go to war against the Taliban in Afghanistan--he stood by that, and he was right to do so. He wasn't talking about the vote to authorize Bush to go to war on Iraq--a vote he came to regret, as have so many others.

The quote you have ripped from its context--twice now--was about an $87 billion appropriation after the war had started.
