The local paper here in San Antonio today ran an article by Marc Lacey of the NY Times on this subject. Quoting the article:

"But when it comes to Bush himself, Fox seems charmed. He labels Bush 'the cockiest guy I have ever met in my life,' a remark Fox clearly meant as a compliment.

"'Bush evokes the go-getter qualities I've always admired in Americans,' he wrote.

"He wrote in the English-language memoir that he hadn't expected Bush to go from governor to president, although Fox explained that was because he was among many of those who underestimated Bush."

Quite a different take on Fox's views of Bush. Didn't think they could have been viewed in a positive light, but there you go.

scared of horses. i heard about that five years ago. were it not true you know good'n well karl would have plastered photos far and wide of the prince on the back of his steed. as for no horses on the ranch, of course not...but somebody check this out. texas landowners can get an agricultural exemption to lower the property tax bill. it's pretty easy. a row of corn or a couple of any kind of farm animal can turn the trick. as i've never seen a "ranch" shot of anything on four legs other than the dog, i've a strong suspicion junior is cheating on this count too. NEWSMEN: check the McLennan County tax records to see if there's an exemption...then ask to see the cow or goat or whatever.

While I'm on the subject, daddy bush lives in Maine, which has a state income tax, but keeps an apartment in Texas which doesn't. but he can file his tax returns from the Texas address, thus screwing his true home state.

Remember the Will Farrell add back in the 2004 election, where he played Bush at a ranch trying to film a commercial. In that add, Farrell portrays Bush as being terrified of a horse, saying "I thought it was a puma" or something to that effect.

For example, I was saddling a horse once when I was about 10, and he quite deliberately stepped back half a step, just enough so that his left front hoof was on my left foot. Make no mistake, horses can be dangerous if you don't know how to act around them. They can bite, step on you, kick, and some of them delight at heading for the nearest tree, trying to brush you off of the saddle with a low-handing branch. Many horses take a deep breath when you're saddling them, and you have to sort of knee them in the side to get them to expel the breath, so you can tighten the cinch enough so the saddle doesn't slide upside down while you're riding. You see, horses know a lot of tricks, and you have to keep one step ahead of them.

Given that, is it any surprise that Bush is uncomfortable around horses?

I've spent enough time around horses to be very afraid and wary whenever I have to be near them. Ok, he's lived in Texas for a long time and people do pick up accents after a while, but I would say 75% of it is BS just to poll well with the "simple folks". In fact I don't remember where or when I saw it, but there as a video online of Bush from 15-20 years ago and there was no hint of a Texas twang.

Kerry lost a brilliant opportunity by not approaching Redford and requesting to ride his ranch on horseback for a campaign photo op. It would have accomplished two goals: 1) Dared bush to get on a horse and not sweat like a pig and shake like jello; and, 2) Promoted awareness of Redford's environmental position and (hopefully) support of Kerry.

I don't know if Redford supported Kerry or not, but it would have been a great ad, the two of them riding around on Redford's bona fide ranch.
