Obama: I Would Support Dodd's Filibuster
Obama spokesman Bill Burton sends over this statement in response to our story saying that MoveOn and the top liberal bloggers are teaming up to press Hillary and Obama to get Chris Dodd's back on the threatened filibuster:
"Senator Obama has serious concerns about many provisions in this bill, especially the provision on giving retroactive immunity to the telephone companies. He is hopeful that this bill can be improved by the Senate Judiciary Committee. But if the bill comes to the Senate floor in its current form, he would support a filibuster of it."
No direct mention of Dodd, but clearly supporting Dodd's idea of filibustering this bill. We obviously don't know what the ultimate bill will look like, but Obama can't really be expected to comment on theoreticals, and this represents at least a quasi-declaration of opposition to telecom immunity in general.
Late Update: Just to clarify, this statement, like Hillary's, in no way represents support for Dodd's threat to filibuster any bill containing telecom immunity.

You seem to be working extra hard here to keep this nontroversy going.

Morris Sheppard wrote on October 23, 2007 6:36 PM:If I worked really hard I could probably come up with a more wishy washy statement that hedges even more positions. But, as I said, I would have to work really hard at it.
What would be the matter with a statement that simply said, "I am against granting retroactive immunity to telecoms, I support Senator Dodd's hold and would join him in a filibuster?"
TheraP wrote on October 23, 2007 6:42 PM:Better late than never. Better cautiously negative than lukewarm.
Let's reward good behavior and push for more.
Barath wrote on October 23, 2007 6:44 PM:Morris: His spokesman said "he would support a filibuster of it". How is that not enough for you? This is a non-story about how "Obama has failed" (despite his statement against the telecom immunity just hours after the story broke and now his filibuster support). I'm not entirely sure who's been keeping this non-story alive, but it makes no sense to me.
Realize that the bill that has yet to be written - it's still going through committees and amendments are being attached as they always are, and Dodd himself has yet to do anything substantive besides issue press releases, again, because the bill is still making the rounds.
DTM wrote on October 23, 2007 6:49 PM:So can I assume we will get periodic updates on the other named Senator if she fails to respond, a la Kucinich-and-the-UFO?
KJ wrote on October 23, 2007 6:50 PM:Apparently unless he says "I wholeheartedly back Dodd's threatened hold on a bill that has yet to come to the foor, but when and if it does and it contains retroactive immunity for telecoms and Dodd places a hold, I will support that hold, when and if it happens. If Senator Reid follows through with his threat to override that hold, as reportered in the papers but not confirmed by Senator Reid, and then Dodd filibuster's the bill as he has threatened to do, I will support Dodd's filibuster when and if the FISA bill hits the floor with retroactive telecom immunity in it," then he's just wishy washy.
NONTROVERSY.

Don Quixote wrote on October 23, 2007 6:54 PM:Greg, you must very dense or else a sorry assed republican (sic) to want the telcos to get immunity and not be required to testify under oath about their nefarious deeds.
Of course I believe that Senator John D. Rockefeller IV is acting out of conviction and not because of the more than $42,000 in political donations. Of course I do!
I love it.
Congratulations are due to Dodd. I sent a contribution his way for his role in really mobilizing the early vocal opposition to the signs of capitulation. We should all take a closer look at Dodd. Even if he isn't going to win, supporting his campaign changes the dynamic of the race, as you all surely know. He's an easy second or third pick for me.

Anonymous wrote on October 23, 2007 8:48 PM:This has absolutely NOTHING to do with Dodd. Obama came out with his statement against retroactive immunity for telecoms on the same day (literally hours later--he was campaigning in Nevada). This is in response to Greg's question.
NONTROVERSY.

Once again, Obama is served poorly by his "insider" advisors who don't know the first thing about how to run a campaign about change because that's not what they do or what they want. Axelrod out of Chicago and the DC people who have glommed on to Obama are all about the status quo and his campaign has reflected that. If his campaign was about change he would have hopped on this issue immediately without any prodding instead of waiting to see which way the wind was blowing.
Coonsey wrote on October 23, 2007 9:07 PM:Typical of MOST media outlets and blogs - HILLARY is mentioned FIRST and in the HEADLINES as saying something - EVEN THOUGH, Senator Obama said it FIRST. Look at your TIME of day people.
The media is pushing HILLARY. This is ridiculous.

I was just looking at the subsequent post with Clinton's [non]statement, then came back to this. Seems like you would want to change "Obama" to "Clinton" now.
I still don't know Clinton's position on immunity for the telecoms. Will Greg call it a "quasi-declaration of opposition to telecom immunity in general" with respect to Clinton, as well?

I sent money, also. In fact, I didn't even have a pick, but have now chosen to support Dodd. I need to do more research on the issues and Dodd's positions, but for now, please just give me someone who will protect our Constitution against the Repubs and the quivering Dems who won't.

This NONTROVERSY is getting more and more ridiculous by the moment.
For the umpteenth time: there is no bill to vote on yet. It is in the Judiciary Committee. Dodd has only talked about what he would do IF the bill comes to the floor with telecom immunity. He then talks about what he would do IF Senator Reid overrides his bill.
Nontroversy.
Dantana wrote on October 24, 2007 12:40 AM:Obama's statement seemed a bit more firm that Hillary' statement. At least he uttered the words "telecom immunity". MAN I LOVE THIS SH!T, BETTER THAN ANY TV DRAMA AND A TAD MORE PRESCIENT.

Apparently you are just plugging into this melodrama. The problem is that Obama spoke out about this bill the day the agreement was announced. Now it's he's being "forced" to give a position... People will spin this shit, however they want. But facts are facts.

Well for most it is a method of playing the game and working out how to make money by developing skills that can earn good amounts of Runescape money in comparison to the time invested. For others they have developed a keen sense of the Runescape markets and managed to provide a service of buying and selling major raw and processed materials that are in high demand and supply. This means of making Runescape gold is referred to as merchanting and loads of information about how to go about earning gold in this way can be found in free Runescape gold guides that are on many Runescape fan sites and forums. Even with the availability of free Runescape gold guides there are also many Runescape gold guides for sale on the internet, though from my experience none are really worth the money if you have been playing for a couple of months and have reviewed a few of the free guides to making Runescape gold on Runescape fan sites and forums.

Memo to John Edwards:
You have a big problem, sir. The National Enquirer is not backing down on the story about your recent adultry. As Dick Morris, former Clinton buddy, found out from "THE STAR" tabloid, when the tabloids don't back down then only two things could be true.
Either, the National Enquirer is being totally fooled by a completely believable carload of factual-appearling evidence such as emails, witness statements, pictures, and other court-worthy stuff, OR, the National Enquirer is absolutely knowingly slandering you, Mr. Lawyer, and the now-pregnant former party girl, your supposed girlfriend.
So, if this story by the Enquirer is just a big lie, then WHERE IS THE SLANDER LAWSUIT? Right, I guess the last question is the guts of the matter.
