Poll: Barely A Third Of Republicans Think Things Are Getting Better In Iraq

Now this is a very interesting number buried in the new Gallup poll released today:

All in all, do you think the situation in Iraq is -- getting better for the United States, staying about the same, or getting worse for the United States?

Republicans:

Better: 34%
About the same: 37%
Worse: 27%

Only a third of Republicans think things are getting better over there. Meanwhile, an astonishing 64% of Republicans think things aren't getting better or are getting worse; and more than a quarter of GOPers think things are deteriorating. Keep in mind that the GOP message for months now has been that things are getting better.

What makes these numbers even more intriguing is the fact that most polls show solid majorities of Republicans want the troops to remain in Iraq -- even though we now see that only a slim minority think things are trending towards a good outcome there. Go figure.

I believe the war is going badly, and that there is no hope that things will get any better. However, I also hate the troops, and think that these bozos who signed up deserve to be sent back to Iraq over and over again just to show them what idiots they are, and because it makes George W Bush seem like a resolute leader to me. After all, that's what I really care about - not actual leadership, but just the appearance to a shallow minority of being a War President.

By the way, I don't let my hate for the troops get in the way of saying that General Petraeus and all the troops should get criticism from lefty libs. I also believe that only ardent rightwingers like myself should be allowed that privilege. Thankfully, the Democrats in Congress care a lot about what I say.

Replace "should" with "shouldn't". As you can see, liberals make me so angry that sometimes I can't even write clearly. I know it looks like I'm just a muddled thinker, but that just means I identify with our War President!

Only one of the GOP messages has been that things are getting better. The more powerful GOP message is that things will get *much worse* if we leave, so we have to stay even if it's going badly, which fits pretty well with the Republican responses.

Dear One of the 20%:

I applaud your clear thinking and patriotism. Keep it up. Remember, war is peace, ignorance is strength, freedom is slavery and four legs good, two legs bad.

Time-honored Republican debating tactic: take enough derivatives until the sign comes out in your favor. Never mind that the war itself has been a disaster and the trend (first derivative) is negative; the trend if we leave will be even more negative (second derivative) so we must stay.

So where are these 64% of Republicans when it comes to CHANGING Course in Iraq during voting in Congress?

They are on their knees to the King. that's where.

Media Mis-Information – We’re Already in WWIII

By Coonsey

On Wednesday, October 17, President Bush said during his press conference, “We’ve got a leader in Iran who has announced that he wants to destroy Israel, so I’ve told people that, if you’re interested in avoiding World War III, it seems like you ought to be interested in preventing them from having the knowledge necessary to make a nuclear weapon.”

A sample of today’s headlines say, “Bush warns of WWIII if Iran goes nuclear”, “Bush raises specter of 'WWIII' if Iran gets nuclear arms” and “Iran brushes off Bush 'World War III' warning”.

The media is saying a sitting President should never say the word WWIII in public. They are in shock that Bush would even think of saying those words.

I’ve got another shock for them. We’re already in WWIII. We’ve been in WWIII since President Bush announced that we were invading/attacking Iraq in March of 2003.

When we punched that final hole into the bee hive of the Middle East, as Ross Perot once said, you could hear a large sucking sound coming from over there. That sound was the ‘seal’ being glued around the United State’s arm; the arm that was rammed into the bee hive, thereby never allowing the U.S. to withdraw again. At least not without a great deal of harm to all involved.

Iran, Syria and Turkey all either have insurgents or troops wanting to take on certain religious groups in Iraq.

Russia’s President Putin is tossing out threats toward the U.S. for being in Iraq. Putin is also taking up sides with Iran’s leader about his nuclear capabilities.

China slammed the United States for bestowing the nation's highest civilian honor on the Dalai Lama, calling the ceremony an affront to the budding relations between the countries.

Hugo Chavez: "If the Imperialist Government of the White House Dares to Invade Venezuela, the War of 100 Years Will be Unleashed in South America"

We’re still working on North Korea's nuclear weapons program.

Now we have President Bush threatening a WWIII if Iran insists on having nuclear weapons.

As the linked Gallup article notes, there may be a problem with the way the question was asked,in that it didn't give a timeframe. Other polls by CBS ect, that ask whether things have gotten better or worse since the surge began, have obtained a very different result, with those saying better outnumbering those saying worse by about 2-1.
