Report: GOP Sen. Cochran Mulling Retirement
Is another GOP Senator about to announce his retirement? GOP sources are saying that Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS) may be leaning towards quitting, with an official announcement of his plans set for early November.
Despite Mississippi's heavy Republican lean, national and local Democrats are hoping to take advantage of an open seat opportunity in the state. In particular, Democrats believe that Mike Moore, the state's popular Attorney General from 1988 to 2004 who earned national fame for his successful prosecution of tobacco companies, would be a formidable candidate.

MS is very low on Campaign Diaries's detailed Senate rankings but you can be sure it would jump up if Cochran got out. Richard L. Adlof wrote on October 31, 2007 11:32 AM:
Senator Cochran, please, feel free to head into the light. Enjoy your retirement checks and don't let the door hit you in the arse on the way out. B-bye.

I know he's popular but the state's GOP would still have an excellent chance. It's not heavily reported or anything, but Mississippi is actually trending more and more Republican (like Louisiana).
For instance, Mississippi showed virtually no signs of giving the Dems a break in 2006. The state's 2 Republican representatives were easily re-elected, Trent Lott (a controversially conservative Republican) was re-elected by a nearly 2 to 1 margin and the GOP ultimately won control of the Mississippi State Senate for the first time since Reconstruction. Most of the rest of the South was also only marginally kind to the Dems.
My point is that Mississippi is not in a very generous mood to Dems right now. Next week, GOP Governor Barbour is expected to win re-election, possibly in a landslide and the trend continues. We're not looking at a Virginia-like scenario here.

Moore, like Gore, should be hailed as a hero for hia investigative reporting on the problems we face in this country, not used as a club to hit Dems over the head.
And I think you'll be unpleasantly surprised at how many formerly "Red" states elect Democrats in this coming election...

Cochran is a legend and even if Mississippi is right-leaning and the R candidate stands a good chance of winning, the NRSC is going to have to pour that much of their limited resources into making sure he/she does. They must be groaning over this one :)

I know he has brought the pork to our state since he has been in office, but he has been a "YES" man for G.W.Bush from the get-go. It kills me how the people of Mississippi will vote against their economic interests in order to keep them damned liberals out of office. Most of the people who vote in our state are older, church going folk who vote on emotion instead of the issues.
Pray for Mississippi!

These slippery bastards can smell trouble a long way off, and their EGO's
just can't stand being rejected.
Think not???????????????? Just look at anything said or done "vs. George W.", and it's automatically unpatriotic, unChristian, and supportive of (their) War on Terror.
Toooooooooooooooo bad they won't be living long enough to see History write the real truth of this disasterous 8 years.
