Huckabee: Abortion Should Not Be Left To The States

Appearing today on Fox News Sunday, Mike Huckabee said the question of abortion should not be left to the states, and criticized National Right To Life for endorsing Fred Thompson, who believes the issue should be devolved rather than declaring an inherent right to life.

"If morality is the point here, and if it's right or wrong, not just a political question, then you can't have 50 different versions of what's right and what's wrong," Huckabee said, invoking "the logic of the Civl War" and comparing abortion to the evils of slavery.

The most shocking thing I heard Huckabee say today had nothing to do with abortion.

He talked about the effects of deficit spending.

That is every bit as outrageous for a republican to be bringing up as---say---Obama talking about social security.

It just is not done in polite republican circles.

Huckabee is, of course, correct in that issues like abortion are national issues that need national "solutions". In the case of abortion, the solution is to defer to the judgment of the mother-to-be and her doctor, just as Roe v Wade decided. The same can be said about the national health care problem - it needs a national solution, not a group of state solutions. The Huckabee problem is also a national problem, and it will receive a national solution - not a single Electoral College vote for him.

Yeah . . . Huckleberry is correct. Abortion is not a State's Rights' issue . . . The Federal Government should insure that abortions are safe, legal and rare.

The thing I find strange is that Huckleberry did not say that this health issue could be solved by just choosing to diet or by being kicked in the head by Chuck Norris.

There's no such thing as halfway pregnant. If Huckabee believes that human life begins at conception then he's got to shut down the fertility clinics that dispose of excess embryos. And thinking nationally is thinking too small: he's got to apply sanctions to foreign countries which permit abortion (genocide of the unborn, you see). And he's got to prevent American women from ever traveling to those countries: it's the only way to be sure. And for every miscarriage, there has to be an investigation to see whether the woman caused the miscarriage, either deliberately or through pre-natal negligence.
