Report: McCain Stands By As His Supporter Calls Hillary A "Bitch"

We've just obtained some video of a Fox local affiliate reporting on a McCain campaign appearance in South Carolina. In it, one of McCain's supporters emphatically calls Hillary Clinton, McCain's fellow United States Senator, a "bitch."

McCain's response? According to the Fox affiliate's reporter, McCain "laughed off" the comment. Take a look:

Transcript:

FOX REPORTER: Of course there could be a lot of name-calling on the campaign trail. But the candidates aren't the only ones doing the mudslinging. During an event in South Carolina yesterday, Arizona Senator John McCain was asked how he planned on beating his democratic rival Hillary Clinton. And his supporter used a term that rhymes with "rich."

MCCAIN SUPPORTER: How do we beat the bitch?

FOX REPORTER: McCain laughed off the comment and then he tried to change the subject.

We contacted the McCain campaign about this to ask whether McCain should have condemned the remark, whether he wanted to condemn it now, and whether the Fox affiliate's report had represented what happened accurately.

His camp declined to comment.

This reminds me of when he wouldn't dare not support the flying of the confederate flag in South Carolina in 2000. (He belatedly issued a mea culpa on that, if I recall correctly. ) I have a lot of respect for his enduring captivity as a POW, for his opposition to Bush's torture policy, and for his championing of campaign finance reform. But his desperate craving to be President seems to override his basic sense of decency.

The Republicans will make this the most low-down, dirty, name-calling, slander-driven, fear-mongering, lying campaign possible.

The Republicans' only hope is to prevent voters from using the thinking part of their brains. They will be driving for the brain stem and the amygdala and the crotch.

The way to thwart them is to refuse to play their game. Do not give in to name-calling, to fear, to sneering, to cynicism.

Refute their lies; refuse to adopt their sneering tone; appeal to higher instincts. Expose their strategy at every turn.

Republicans are wrecking our government. They hate our constitution. They mean to stay in power to continue their destruction. Do not let them.

I have a little sympathy for Mr.McCain here. When I taught at the Ohio State University, I was talking in a stat class about types of variables, and I said that "You can't be pregnant to a degree; it's yes or no." To which a student quipped something like "Unless you're black." I was totally floored, and quickly moved on.

Well, some little black student reported me for racism - note that I did not say the comment. Next, the racist and biased EEOC officer for the college sat down and had a little talk with me, which started with something like "Why do you make racist comments in class?"

So, I have some sympathy with the ambush victims.

A good lesson to be learned here!!! Using such language on your opponents only strengthens them with their supporters. It may make you feel good, but it UNECESSARILY emboldens your opponents supporters. Bush is a great example. We don't want hard core opposition, we want to create doubt and uncertainty in their ranks and the only way to bring that about is by dealing with issues.

It seems that those wishing to excuse this admitedly rather mundane behavior by McCain and his supporters want Democrats to confuse what is said between friends without cameras rolling and what is televised.

"General betray us" is a friggin hate crime to the military, purportedly because it's on the serious pages of the NY Times. But When Limbaugh for eight years compared Clintons presidency to a hostage taking terrorist operation "America held hostage", when they put a photo of Chelsea up as the Whitehouse dog, or when Cheney tells Leahy to "go f himself" they find nothing inappropriate in their own crudeness. "Can't we take it?" they say.

The correct response to this of course is to have a bunch of pre engineered comebacks ready to Republicans who have gone publ;ic with offended sensibilities to Democratic supporter's inappropriateness.

For example a Moveon splinter faction should get a few banner ads up that say.. To Senator McCain: About Moveon labeling Gen. Patreus "General Betray Us" what we also wanted to label him was Bush's "Bitch" but until now we thought that might offend your sensibilities. You think calling a strong military man names is as funny as you thought calling a female US Senator names is, or

I see at least some here believeing that you beat low ball Republican attacks by ignoring them and taking the high road - this is totally wrong. Like it or not recent political history is replete with examples of sucessful gutterslinging politics and void of noble campaign sucesses.

Case in point was the seminal Wiecker (R) - Lieberman (D) Senate race in CT where Leiberman posing as a Democrat beat Lowell Wiecker (an INO Republican) from the right with a campaign that was almost devoid of substantive debate but consisted solely of Joe calling Lowell a pussy for not immediately jumping in the gutter and wrestling with him over his unilateral attacks.

Right now Bush had a meeting with the German President. McCain is upset that he was promised the White House if he got Bush in office. Now the GOP base is giving their support to Mob King Rudy. This shows the world that American Men have little to no respect for woman and with that said it also shows they have no respect for their Moms or sisters either.
