Edwards Mocks Hillary "Kindergarten" Attack On Obama: "I Wanted To Be Superman"
John Edwards got a good laugh out of an audience of several hundred at a community college in Iowa yesterday when he mocked the Hillary campaign's much-derided claim that the voraciously ambitious Barack Obama said he wanted to be President way back in kindergarten. The Des Moines Register reports:
Edwards grinned as he recounted the Clinton campaign's allegation."I want to confess to all of you right now," he told his audience, "in third grade, I wanted to be two things: I wanted to be a cowboy, and I wanted to be Superman."
This morning Hillary pollster Mark Penn said that the "kindergarten" claim had actually been intended all along as a joke.

Fascinating how the interval between the release of the thing and the official "j/k" was just long enough for Penn to do some polling on whether it was getting any traction or just backfiring against her in a huge way.

The Clinton campaign is obviously reeling from the effects of their candidate's failed attempts to go after Obama over the weekend. Patti Solis Doyle, Clinton's Campaign Manager, is now resorting to falsly accusing the Obama campaign of playing "dirty tricks" in Iowa such as negative push-polling to test the effectiveness of anti-Hillary messages, and saying that Obama staffers are attacking Hillary's staffers - all of this to DRAG HIM DOWN into the mud. Here's the link from the Des Moines Register. You’ve got to read this for yourself.

Clinton e-mail warns more "dirty tricks" cropping up:

We all know Obama isn’t behind any negative campaigning. This is getting bad. Hillary is trying to commit "murder-suicide” in Iowa to prevent Obama from winning there!
They are accusing Obama of playing dirty tricks when in fact their planting of this total MIS-information IS the dirty trick. Unbelievable.
Proving once again that if you make too subtle a joke it flies right over most American's heads. :(
DTM wrote on December 4, 2007 11:54 AM:Of course it doesn't really help them even if it was an attempted joke, because that just makes them look all the worse for blowing the joke. And of course they are just adding to the lifespan of Kindergate by coming out with this defense.
Indeed, it amazes me that even at this late stage, the Clinton campaign has not yet learned that sometimes you just have to stop talking.

Since April I've been insisting that the dominant media narrative, that Clinton's campaign has been "flawless" and "disciplined" is completely out of touch with reality, from the "lobbyists are people too!" defense, to the apparent flip-flop disavowing nuclear strikes in some instances (and the secondary flip flop about ruling out attacks in Pakistan and then a week later refusing to rule out nuclear attacks in Pakistan), and on and on...her campaign has made plenty of mistakes. Obama hasn't been perfect either, nor has Edwards, but the dominant narrative for a while there was that Obama was a gaffe machine and Hillary was perfect...I think we all see now how misguided that view was.
Next media-generated myth to take down: the "beer track"/"wine track" divide

CalD wrote on December 4, 2007 12:17 PM:Joke my ass. I'm pretty firmly convinced that this was bait for an ambush -- i.e., an opening to push back on this:
"Asked if that were a reference to the Gerth allegation, an Obama spokesperson left virtually no doubt that it was, telling Newsday: "Barack Obama has not been mapping out his run for president from Washington for the last 20 years like some of his opponents.""But the source that Gerth and Van Natta cited with supposed first-hand knowledge of this plan -- historian Taylor Branch -- has since vehemently denied that any such pact existed. "The story is preposterous," Branch told The Washington Post, adding: "I never heard either Clinton talk about a 'plan' for them both to become president."
"It's hard to see how the use of Gerth's allegations could possibly play well among Dem activists. Many of them dislike Gerth for his role in "breaking" the Whitewater story and see Gerth's book as an anti-Hillary hatchet job."
If that's the case though, it still remains to be seen if it works.

What would it take for us to know that Kindergate has been an enormous tactical blunder? Penn coming back to Morning Joe to commit seppuku?
Genghis wrote on December 4, 2007 12:34 PM:Obviously, the Clinton campaign needs to work on its delivery.

"voraciously ambitious"?
That sounds a lot like biased language to me, when not used as part of a quote.
CornBred wrote on December 4, 2007 2:35 PM:Prediction:
John Edwards is a very admirable guy, but is unfortunately not gonna win Iowa or anywhere else. This race is now between Hillary and Obama...period. A majority of Edwards supporters dislike Hillary (remember that Edwards very much dislikes Hillary and is going to everything possible to make sure she doesn't win the nomination...in part because there will be NO role for him in a Clinton administration and he knows it), therefore they will naturally shift toward Obama when Edwards drops out of the race after finishing third in the Iowa caucuses. Hillary finishes second in Iowa. Edwards voters go to Obama in NH and SC, and this race is O-V-E-R.
Next prediction:
Edwards does not get the VP nod due to electoral reasons (Remember, he couldn't even help John Kerry win North Carolina in '04), but gets picked as Obama's Attorney General in Jan '09. Edwards proves to be one of the best AG's in the last 50 years. Can you even imagine how good he'd be going after health insurance companies, polluting oil companies, etc!! He's a natural born killer in that role, and would bring back some honor in an office that was soiled by Ashcroft and Gonzo.
jeanruss wrote on December 4, 2007 2:40 PM:Edwards is going to win Iowa and then the general election-his momentum is building and even meny Republicans will vote for him, as was shown at the post debate on CNN.
DTM wrote on December 4, 2007 3:24 PM:I don't know if Edwards will win Iowa or the nomination, but his gamble on going directly after Clinton on ethics and honesty appears to have paid off so far: her numbers in Iowa have gone down since then, and his have stabilized and maybe even gone up a bit.
It is indeed a problem that meanwhile Obama appears to be gaining support in Iowa at an accelerating pace. But in addition to Edwards having good will and organization left over from 2004, most importantly he still has plenty of time left to convince Iowa voters to come back to him.
And who knows: maybe Clinton will have a surprisingly bad finish in Iowa (a distant third or worse). In such a scenario, I don't think anyone really knows where her support in subsequent states will go.

CalD wrote on December 4, 2007 8:26 PM:Hey, who knows? If John Edwards had started working on his plan as far back as Barack Obama, maybe he'd be superman by now. ;)
Anyway you've got to admit it's kind of nice to see someone from the Democratic side of the aisle (for a change) who knows how to work the media. I imagine just about every political program on cable in the past 24 hours has had a Clinton spokesweasel on, using this as an opportunity land a few jabs on Barack Obama. Another day and it could spill into print.
I'm sorry, but I just have a hard time believing they could have trotted out Chris Lehane (that guy scares me) all prepped and primed, hair combed and shoes shined in time for Dan Abrams Live last night if they hadn't had him lined up in advance. That was just a little too Johnny-on-the-spot for my suspicious mind. And listening just now to the Mark Penn clip TPM has posted, I would swear he actually seemed to be enjoying himself.
