Hillary County Chair Who Sent Obama Muslim Smear Email Is Identified
So the Iowa county chair who was volunteering for Hillary and sent the Obama Muslim smear email has been identified: She's one Judy Rose.
Judy Rose -- or, at least, someone with the same name -- is, or was, one of the members of the 250 Iowa women who are leading Team Hillary in that state.
Late Update: Taylor Marsh has an interesting interview with Iowa Independent editor Chase Martyn, who defends the Hillary campaign:
Obama has been the subject of a lot of different types of emails. But I should also say though that on a daily basis I get far worse emails accusing Hillary Clinton...the things I get told about Hillary Clinton on a daily basis are just so much worse.

For those of us not intimately familiar with the roles in a campaign, especially in a state like Iowa, can you explain what role, if any, a County Chair plays? Do they participate in campaign strategy? Or is it a honorific of sorts? It's hard to gauge who this person is and whether or not the Clinton staffer should have taken more action in light of Judy Roses' role (if any) in the campaign.
Thanks.

Stallionaire wrote on December 5, 2007 5:27 PM:The coverage of this story as compared to yesterday's Obama dirty tricks story is disturbing. (it's true here, but to be fair, CNN is far worse)
Here's today's headline: "Hillary Volunteer Fired for Forwarding Obama Smear"
Wow, Hill is so tough and honest she stopped that rumor dead in its tracks and fired the mud-slinger!
And yesterday when some yahoo in NH-who supports Hill because of "women's rights"-can't be 100% sure but thinks an Obama volunteer was mean to her on the phone, the headline is something to the effect of: "Clinton accuses Obama campaign of 'dirty tricks'".
How dare he play dirty.
This site and others are allowing Hill to dictate the terms of the discussion and it's outrageous.
Collapsing fast - the Clinton News Network's Blitzer now referring to Ms Bill as "arguable" front runner
Live by inevitablity die by it
Just back from SF Homeless Connect with a Hillary supporter on my team...It was ALL I could do to keep from howling
Dusting off turkey fork
Ms. Rose used very poor judgment and, as a consequence, has been rightly asked to leave her volunteer position with the Clinton campaign.

All I'm going to say in response to this story is that it is interesting political theater.

joejoejoe wrote on December 5, 2007 6:25 PM:As an Obama supporter I'm going to give Ms. Rose the benefit of the doubt and just believe she's ignorant about Islam, religiion, and Barack Obama.
She resigned after doing a stupid thing which is the right thing to do. I'm not going to make her out to be some terrible harpy for one stupid mistake. She's a volunteer who did something ignornant. I still wish her well and hope she learns from her mistake. I get forwarded garbage emails all the time from friends and family -- it's just ignorance. The right way to fight it is confront it with the truth.
The antidote to ignorance isn't crushing an Iowa county volunteer - it's educating people about WHY "Muslim" isn't a smear and why repeating lies isn't OK.

Good one!
(Of course, seriously, let's all remember that Rove, in 2000, sent George W. Bush's debate book to Al Gore's headquarters in an attempt to say Gore's campaign staff stole it.)
"This will not be tolerated" from the Hilary campaign? Really? Come on it is not tolerated only if you get caught. Remember the whole kindergarten thing? Hillary would play dirty if it weren't for the fact that Obama doesnt. People are sick of that stuff. So Hill is flopping around in the wind. She wants to win, but doesnt know how to do it because she is still "Old School" politics - knock down drag out way. That is what she is "experienced" at. Anyway I wish anybody who hears the whole "Obama is a muslim" thing to please direct these uninformed people to Obama's speech on Religion in Politics. No one could have a doubt after watching it. Thanks

joejoejoe, a little public humiliation will make people think twice about forwarding bigotry and lies though.
Allen wrote on December 5, 2007 8:03 PM:Why was the headline "Hillary volunteer fired" and then in the article it says she is being asked to step down?
Does anybody see the bias? Greg, how many times do you guys have to be called on this type of crap before you guys just stick to the facts?

Thanks for writing what you did at 6:25pm:

I agree with you, and am proud that you are an Obama supporter.

This garbage gets forwarded all the time by people with views that are far more human. Just as linking to a post isn't the same as making the argument in the post, forwarding an email isn't the same as making as making the argument within the email.

I don't think so.

Some attendees will arrive without a settled preference, most attendees will arrive with preferences but without firm attachment to a campaign apparatus. A campaign "county chair" at this level will be responsible for a phone and email list of committed supporters, most likely in the single digits.
IOW, not a major cog in the machine.
Anonymous wrote on December 6, 2007 12:16 AM:That quote from the Taylor Marsh interview (leaving aside the ridiculousness of citing Taylor Marsh on *anything*) is in no way enlightening. Hillary has been subject to "so much worse"... full stop. WTF?!?
I don't quibble with Chase Martyn, who -- as a loyal Hillary camper -- is merely trying to get those talking points out there. But what on earth are you doing legitimizing it as some "Late Update" to the J.Rose story, when it contains nothing which is at all newsworthy, let alone relevant to the story at hand?
The bias towards Clinton on this site is a flat out joke.
DTM wrote on December 6, 2007 7:52 AM:The useful thing I got out of Martyn's interview was a description of the selection and variable role of County Chairs.
Anonymous wrote on December 6, 2007 11:33 AM:The things he is told about Hillary are just "so much worse" than being a secret terrorist agent working for the overthrow of the U.S. government?
O.K. my interest is piqued. Greg, go get the contents of those emails and post them here for us.

I am really surprised at this. But I guess with the Clintons you just have to figure anyone making money off of this stuff is either both feet in or both feet out. There is simply no neutrality where they are involved. I am surprised that TPM would kind of hock credibility to spin stories when their whole franchise depends on independent credibility.
