Rudy Cutting Back On New Hampshire Ads

In a sign that his campaign in New Hampshire could be flagging, Rudy Giuliani has been significantly scaling back his ad buys in the state. Records show that numerous ad buys in the Boston TV stations have either been cut by more than half, or cancelled entirely.

The campaign has kept up its buys in the much cheaper WMUR in Manchester, where Rudy has a strong base of support thanks in part to the mayor's endorsement — so Rudy might be going trying for a decent second or third through a strong, concentrated showing there. And the campaign is shifting its resources to Florida, where Rudy is also sinking fast.

Horserace reporting. This has nothing to do with the issues.

Rudy's stance on issues are even worse than his polls

Let's agree to call this "Rudimentum".

eric wrote on December 17, 2007 10:41 AM:

actually, this is not horseracing. This is process that matters. Unlike reporting on day-to-day poll numbers, this is a news story about an event that will affect the race for the presidency. When a man perceived as being the front runner pulls out of a northeastern state (where he should be geographically strongest), that is news.

someparisian wrote on December 17, 2007 10:43 AM:

Whoa, quick googling, 'rudimentum' is actually an embryo-related medical term. There's some irony right here.

Yes, let's go to the OTHER extreme in our coverage.

Excellent. AMF Mr. 9/11. Now maybe we can see some jail time over misappropriation of city funds. As that old saying goes "What comes around goes around."

Rudy's campaign has value as a living laboratory. It's an opportunity to see how a massive payload of scandal (including s*e*x) effects a very conservative Republican. What does the media do with all the muck? How does CNN spin it? How completely does Fox News ignore it? These are questions which only our living lab can answer. We've been through the Paula Jones/Whitewater nonsense, so it's not like we have no benchmarks. Metrics include air time, times a story gets repeated or referred to, vertical inches of Wash Post column space.

The move to Fla. is just an excuse for Rudy and Judith to spend the holidays in some very pricey resort/hotel in Palm Beach.

Rude-ee's big problem is he has gotta win . . . cuz no other Republican candidate wants his gnome-like arse as a wingman . . . Except maybe like-minded Clinton . . . Who failed to register for the correct party.

Hey! Perhaps if both of them can just concede all fifty states now . . . The Fascist Five can get about apppointing the Clinton/Guiliani ticket Queen and Queen-Wantabee and this whole election thingy can just go away . . .

Is he screwed? In this race, it's hard to say. For the "50-state strategy" to be really effective, Rudy has to remain in the mix up until Feb.5. This seemed doable when he held a sizable national lead. Now that it's evaporated, he should be sunk, as TPM has been predicting almost daily for months now. But if no one emerges from Iowa, NH and SC with some serious momentum, he's still alive. Interestingly, I think Rudy needs a McCain victory in NH for his strategy to work. If Huck wins Iowa and Romney takes NH, it becomes a two-man race between them. If McCain wins NH, things get muddled-- but the 178 year old man could emerge as the "moderate" choice, sinking Rudy. Or not. What a mess.

I suspect Lieberman's endorsement of McCain will do him more harm than good. It'll cost him more indies than he'll gain in Repubs.

I'm reminded of Guiliani's chortling performance with Russert last week when Timeh was reciting his awful poll numbers and Guiliani stopped cackling for a moment to interject, "Did they put Florida in there?". The people of Florida aren't that dumb.

RUDY SAVED LIVES wrote on December 17, 2007 12:44 PM:

Rudy saved the lives of countless Americans on 9-11.

And this is how all you liberals treat him.

This is why liberals can never be counted on as being patriotic!!!

bob wrote on December 17, 2007 12:46 PM:

Like I've been saying for a long time, Rudy should sue his campaign advisers and consultants for malpractice. It was the dumbest strategy on Earth from the get-go. I predict that he will not win any states other than New York and the states it borders.

Rudy Killed People wrote on December 17, 2007 12:59 PM:

No, if anything, Rudy killed people on 9/11. The fact that he had to evacuate his command center/sex den that morning at 9:28 am led to miscommunications which led to scores of NYFD crushed in the south tower.

oh please let it be true that this sniveling evil man is headed back to his miserable hole. saved lives? hah, that's a good one. you don't know how horrible this man is. Watch the documentary "Giuliani Time" for a taste, or read the "Worse than Bush" cover story on Harper's a couple months back. He craves power like vampires crave blood, and he will do anything and say anything to get to it. If he is toast, then man oh man did this country (and planet) seriously just dodge a very major bullet. LATER WEASEL!!!!

Meh, don't overestimate Mayor Guinta's influence.

Easy rule of thumb here: if you think it's worthwhile spending the time to estimate it, you're overestimating it.

Giuliani's popular with his NH base because he makes fun of those stupid Democrats and talks about how he's smart enough to know you have to hit the bad people and he's gonna hit them hard.

...and hey, anyone else notice that no newspapers have decided to endorse Mr. Only-I-Can-Take-Hillary?

Can someone with the requisite skills construct a "Separated at Birth" for Guiliani and Count Orlok the Vampire from Murnau's 1922 "Nosferatu"? Spitting image, if I do say.
