Fred Thompson: I'm Skipping New Hampshire

Fred Thompson has performed dismally in New Hampshire polls, and he clearly knows it — he says he's skipping the state. Thompson admitted today on MSNBC: "We're not competitive in New Hampshire. And we won’t be campaigning there other than to go in for the debates which are tomorrow night and sunday night."

Instead, his campaign sent out a fundraising e-mail today asking for help so that they could compete in South Carolina, where the Republicans will vote on January 19.

Can this strategy have any hope of working, with Mike Huckabee already having won Iowa, taken the lead in South Carolina polls, and on the whole occupied the role of the Southern conservative candidate? Quite frankly, it's starting to sound like Rudy Giuliani's improbable February 5 strategy — but on a smaller, less ambitious scale.

``Since 1949 the unemployment rate has never risen by this magnitude without the economy being in recession,'' John Ryding, chief U.S. economist at Bear Stearns Cos. in New York, said in a note to clients. ``We now put ourselves on recession watch.''

Factories have already slowed. ISM's manufacturing index for last month fell to 47.7, the lowest since April 2003, the purchasers group said this week.

Factory payrolls decreased by 31,000 after falling 13,000 a month earlier. Economists had forecast a drop of 15,000 in manufacturing employment. Builders reduced payrolls by 49,000 after cutting 37,000 jobs in November.

Government payrolls increased by 31,000 during the month, indicating private payrolls declined by 13,000.

Jan. 4 (Bloomberg) -- The Federal Reserve will increase the size of two scheduled auctions of emergency loans by 50 percent to $30 billion as part of a global attempt by central bankers to restore faith in the money markets.

Of 1,000 owners surveyed nationwide, only 28 percent said they felt economic conditions for their businesses were improving, while 65 percent said conditions were getting worse.

After inching down in recent weeks, average gas prices across the nation rose by 7.3 cents last week to $3.053 per gallon, 71.9 cents higher than the same period last year, the Energy Information Administration reported Wednesday.

"Staying at [the $100] level will mean inflation and economic hardship," says Fadel Gheit, senior energy analyst for Oppenheimer Holdings (OPY). "The price has nothing to do with fundamentals, but it has a broad impact."

Here's a question for you. How many books on economics has your candidate read? How many has he WRITTEN? The best economist in the world can't convince someone to whom he can't explain the problem. It looks very like we are headed for a recession or a depression. Before you cast your all-important primary vote, shouldn't you find out who has the most education on economics? This is not one of those times when you basically get bragging rights. This time, it may make the difference between you keeping your job and house or living on the streets. Remember, if we ALL sink there will be no one to give you welfare. Even people who OWN their house could be dispossessed by incredibly high real estate taxes. I know everyone says he is a long shot, but PLEASE do yourself (and me) a favor and research Dr. Ron Paul. The house you save may be your own.

Wow. So without any NH result he's trying to jump into the fray and compete against the highly-financed Romney machine, the large #'s of low-level Huckabee ground forces, and the McCain 'establishment/media support' (pro-McCain voters plus those encouraged 'round-the-clock to vote against the previous 2)?

This primary could very well be sub-titled "Fred's Last Gasp".

That depends. More precisely, what is Thompson running for?

It seems pretty clear that he's not all that interested in being president. Either that, or he's too old/tired/lazy to make much of an effort.

However, if he stays in long enough, he could rack up a number of third and fourth place showings, maybe even finishing in second place once or twice, collect a bunch of delegates, and parlay those delegates into a VP nomination or cabinet post in a brokered convention.

A VP post, in particular, might be very attractive to Fred - it's an easy job, if he wants it to be, and it provides Jeri with all the access to power and DC socializing that she could ever want.

Or, he could parlay them into a 'power broker' block, depending on whether he or his campaign staff thinks they have a chance to collect enough to exert certain policy influences over the frontrunners at the convention.

He will have several million to run ads in South Carolina by the time his supporters are finished filling his red pickup truck.

Thompson is his own man. He is going to shock the world because the people who support him stopped Amnesty, stopped Miers, and defeated Dan Rather.

I think those of you who want to hedge your bets should contribute to Thompson. He isn't going to run a negative campaign and there may come a time when you just might need him. Mitt is gone already and just doesn't understand that money will not erase his record.

I'm sorry, the only issues he occupies that a Conservative candidate would possess are Social issues like gay marriage and abortion.

On immigration and fiscal matters he is closer to Brack Obama, HC and JE than Fred Thompson.

Fred Thompson is obviously the most Conservative of the viable candidates left in the race. Any argument to the contrary would indicate a redefinition of Conservatism.

Suprisingly, he has garnered the most endorsements from pro-life organizations.

On Conservative blogs Thompson is the buzz. Moreso from the hit pieces generatred by Politico. They seem to be having an unintended effect of pumping on average of over $10,000 an hour into his coffers (over the last 12 hours).

If anyone is smaller after last night its Rudy Guiliani who generated only 4% last night..

Seriously, I honestly believe Thompson's main impetus for being in this race is to please Jeri. And that means all Fred really wants is the VP nom. And some sleep.

Frederick Paxson wrote on January 5, 2008 10:10 AM:

FRED THOMPSON is the best person to lead this country. He is a true conservative and has been his entire life. All one has to do is check his record to see this.

During my time in the Army as an Intelligence Analyst, I served under both Presidents Carter and Reagan (as my commanders in chief). Without argument, President Reagan was the best commander-in-chief a military person could ever have served under. Fred Thompson possesses the same qualities and vision as President Reagan in that he is strong on national defense and sees a dire need to secure our borders and control immigration.

I can think of no better person to lead this country and fix the problems we have. He is the only candidate from either party who has specific and detailed plans on border security and immigration reform; revitalization of America’s armed forces; saving and protecting Social Security; and tax relief and economic growth. These are detailed on his Web site at www.fred08.com . I challenge you to find any other candidate who has laid out specific plans to fix anything.

Fred Thompson has published his first principles, some of which are mentioned above. In addition to those, he strongly believes in individual liberty, personal responsibility, limited government, federalism, traditional American values, the rule of law and is a strong proponent of the Second Amendment — all concepts established during the birth of our country and documented in our Constitution.

Again, try to find any candidate who has laid out their plans to “fix” this country. You will find they all speak in vague and abstract terms on their plans.

For those who have heard Fred Thompson speak, you will usually hear him say that the Fred Thompson you see today is the same Fred Thompson you saw yesterday and is the same Fred Thompson you will see tomorrow. He stands by his principles and values and doesn’t shift his positions based on polls or public opinion; in other words, he doesn’t say what the voters want to hear just to get elected, but remains steadfast on his views and convictions.

During his time in the Senate he focused on three areas: to lower taxes, strengthen national security and expose waste in the federal government. Fred Thompson has foreign policy experience, having served as member of the Senate Foreign Relations and Senate Intelligence committees.

As chairman of the Senate Governmental Affairs Committee, he opened the investigation in 1997 on the Chinese government’s attempt to influence American policies and elections, and this investigation identified connections with the Clinton administration (documented in the committee’s report).

As a member of the Finance Committee, he worked tirelessly to enact three major tax-cut bills. Fred Thompson remains steadfast and even though a person may not agree with all his views and he understands some may disagree with him, you can count on him to be consistent and unwavering.

Don’t be fooled by his laid back approach and what critics call his “laziness.” As a former assistant U.S. attorney, he earned a reputation as a tough prosecutor and he possesses the toughness this country needs in order to tackle today’s and tomorrow’s issues.

I ask that you take a hard look at what this country needs, then take a hard look at all the other candidates’ views, policies, their records and their track record on consistency. Fred Thompson possesses integrity, loyalty, commitment, energy and decisiveness, all traits of an effective leader, and will emerge as the best person to take this country boldly forward.

Please help Fred win in South Carolina:

Secondly business cycles are called cycles because they are, well, cyclical. That means by definition we are going to have bad times following good times and then we'll have good times again. Of course fiscal and monetary policy can influence the the depth of the those bad times but please, to suggest that Ron Paul is the only person who could "save us from a depression" is ridiculous.

I moved to Colorado as a Liberterian. But Ron Paul is driving me nuts with his pandering and hypocracy on domestic issues, and he is utterly naive and ignorant, verging on stupidity, when it comes to foreign policy.

Republicans in Iowa are a special kind of Stupid: lots of zombie Evangelicals who caucus in herds like the sheepo they are. They have in the past given large percentages (30% give or take) to Pat Robertson and Pat Buchanan, so Huckbee doing well there posing as the Populist and "Jesus Candidate" with the Gomer Pyle glibness was guaranteed to give him a win.

And his win was just as representative as those of Buchanan and Pat Robertson. Which is to say, in the long run, not at all important. Consider that Gomer Huckabee got less than 15% of the non-evangelical vote.

Most of the posters here have no clue what the conservative positions are - they only have the typical ignorant (liberal) self-distortions and charicatures, and dead wrong labeling. So it no wonder that, as Reagan famously said, you know so much that simply isn't so. Huckabee as a "Southern Conservative" is one of those things you're wrong about.

Huckabee is NOT a conservative. He is an Evangelical and other than SOCON issues of Abortion and Gay Marriage, he is a tax increaser ($500 million increase during his term in Arkansas), regulating, big government, illigal immigration loving (granted in-state tuition to illegals) tool of Tyson Chicken.

Bigger Government, Higher Taxes, breaks for illegals, anti-corporate rhetoric... O'l Gomer Pyle Hucklabee is a Populist. He's a pro-life version of John Edwards.

You folks here know nothing of conservatism and the south. You're the kind that would sit in McDonalds eating a McRib and think that you were actually getting southern BBQ.

Sorry, but you're as dead wrong and ignorant in this as you would be in the McDonalds. I grew up in the south, and was stationed in a couple of bases in the South between deployments. Southerners know their conservatives, and Huckbee isnt one of them.

Barack Obama is a member of this church and is running for President of the U.S. If you look at the first page of their website, you will learn that this congregation has a non-negotiable commitment to Africa. No where is AMERICA even mentioned.
Notice too, what color you will need to be if you should want to

Doesn't look like his choice of religion has improved much over his

Are you aware that Obama's middle name is Mohammed? Strip away his

racist, as plainly defined by the stated position of his church! And
possibly a covert worshiper of the Muslim faith, even today. This guy

I cannot believe this has not been all over the TV and newspapers.
This is why it is so important to pass this message along to all of our

NoSoup4U wrote on January 7, 2008 12:55 PM:

Who is Barack Obama?

Probable U. S. presidential candidate, Barack Hussein Obama was born
in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Barack Hussein Obama, Sr., a black MUSLIM
from Nyangoma-Kogel, Kenya and Ann Dunham, a white Athiest from
Wichita, Kansas.

Obama's parents met at the University of Hawaii. When Obama was two
years old, his parents divorced. His father returned to Kenya. His

mother then married Lolo Soetoro, a RADICAL Muslim from Indonesia.
When Obama was 6 years old, the family relocated to Indonesia. Obama
attended a MUSLIM school in Jakarta. He also spent two years in a
Catholic school.

Obama takes great care to conceal the fact that he is a Muslim. He is
quick to point out that, /"He was once a Muslim, but that he also
attended Catholic school."/

Obama's political handlers are attempting to make it appear that he is not a radical.

Obama's introduction to Islam came via his father, and that this
influence was temporary at best. In reality, the senior Obama returned
to Kenya soon after the divorce, and never again had any direct
influence over his son's education.

Lolo Soetoro, the second husband of Obama's mother, Ann Dunham,
introduced his stepson to Islam. Obama was enrolled in a Wahabi school
in Jakarta.

Wahabism is the RADICAL ISLAMIC teaching that is followed by the Muslim
terrorists who are now waging Jihad against the western world. Since
it is politically expedient to be a CHRISTIAN when seeking major
public office in the United States, Barack Hussein Obama has joined
the United Church of Christ in an attempt to downplay his Muslim
background. ALSO, keep in mind that when he was sworn into offi ce he
DID NOT use the Holy Bible, but instead the Koran.

Barack Hussein Obama will NOT recite the Pledge of Allegience nor will he show any reverence for our flag. While others place their hands over their hearts, Obama turns his back to the flag and slouches.

Let us all remain alert concerning Obama's expected presidential
candidacy.

The Muslims have said they plan on destroying the US from the inside
out, what better way to start than at the highest level - through the
President of the United States, one of their own!!!! Where is all this in the media?
