Obama Airing Spanish-Language Ads In Nevada

Barack Obama has two Spanish-language spots on the air in Nevada, courting the Latino vote in the highly-contested caucus.

Here's the 60-second ad:

"Do you remember the hope that brought you or your parents to this country?" the announcer says, followed by video of Obama at a rally, talking about his own background. The narrator continues, "This is now your country. Don't let anything or anybody take away your hope."

The 30-second ad is available after the jump.

"It's time," the announcer says. "Be part of history."

(Translations provided by TPM intern Diane Vacca, a native Spanish speaker.)

Good for him.

Interesting note:

Obama's entire candidacy is based on the idea of making Saul Alinsky's ideas of how political power can be created through the organization of large masses of people. Which makes sense, given the fact that Obama apparently took to Alinsky's ideas quite eagerly when he was working as a community organizer.

Cesar Chavez, hero of many a mexican immigrant, was also a devout disciple of the Alinsky school of thought on organizing as a means of gaining political power.

His pitch is actually quite a natural fit for west coast hispanics, and the fact that he's the son of an immigrant makes the doubly true.

"This is now your country"
I think this might anger some people if it gets out. He's basically telling illegal immigrants that this is now their country.

Good god, spare me from the concern trolls! Tom, surely you're not serious? Last I checked, illegal immigrants typically don't vote, so I'm guessing this video isn't addressed to them. Not every person who has a brown face or speaks Spanish is an illegal. Jeez.

Tom, would you rather he rolled up his sleeves, and built a fence?

Your last name wouldn't happen to be Tancrado, would it?

Yes, I am glad that every spanish speaker is an illegal immigrant and doesn't belong in this country. Since we don't really have GOP commenting on this site too much, and since you dug as hard as you could in a futile attempt to trash on Obama, I'm gonna assume that that racist and completely ignorant comment just came from a Hillary supporter...?

Please do correct me if I'm wrong, because I would much rather believe that it is some pathetic excuse for a citizen from the GOP coming to sling mud at Obama, rather than perhaps a new low for Hillary supporters on here.

Either way, I don't think we really need that kind of bigotry.

From the AP
Bill Clinton on Monday defended the suit, saying the caucus rules unfairly favored one group over another.

"I think the rules ought to be the same for everybody," the former president told more than 550 senior students at Green Valley High School near Las Vegas. "I would question why you would ever have a temporary caucus site and say only the people that work there, i.e., the people that we know are going to vote in a certain way or we think they will, (are) able to caucus."

The plaintiffs are the Nevada State Education Association, its president, Lynn Warne, and five others. Debbie Cahill, the deputy executive director of the teachers' union, is a Clinton supporter and a member of the campaign's Nevada Women's Leadership Council.

Two senior partners of the law firm handling the suit, Kummer, Kaempfer, Bonner, Renshaw and Ferrario, have donated to Clinton in the past. Also, Clinton ally and former Rep. Jim Bilbray is an attorney at the firm.

The state Democratic Party unanimously approved the caucus rules last March, and the Democratic National Committee signed on in August. Four of the six plaintiffs are members of the committee that approved the rules.
_________
FUNNY how "unfair" Bill thinks it is after Obama gets the endorsement.
Clinton is no different than the repug's disenfranchising voters in 2000.

Hillary is a Dem? Man we've got to put her on the repub ticket. She'd fit right in.

Just wondering...
how many supporting Obama have marched with immigrants, or advocated immigrant positions the past few May activities?
If you believe in immigrant rights may I suggest you contact your local
American Friends Service Committee...they are very involved with immigrant justice.

Hillary needs to EARN her votes in Nevada. She has to try to GET MORE PEOPLE OUT TO VOTE.

Suppressing the votes of working people when the DNC APPROVED these extra caucus sites is absolutely appalling.

Trying to say it is not fair to others who do not have it as easy is a sham. If there were no extra caucus sites then it would be equally HARD for democrats to vote.

Is that the message Clinton wants to send? That it should be equally hard for everyone?

I'm sorry Hillary that you did not win the endorsement of the Culinary Union. That is no reason to suppress the vote because you fear it will not go in your favor. Therefore instead of subtle lawsuits (that have nothing to do with you of course), you need to actually WORD TO GET VOTES. Ooooooh what an interesting concept hill. Instead of trying to change the DNC rule in the middle of the game.

nogo war wrote on January 15, 2008 6:42 PM:

I must also add HRC and Edwards supporters in regard to marching and standing for human rights.
If you don't want to do that, don't require your candidate to do so...or complain when they don't.
